1. Our day at Hankley Common was as near to perfect as you will get for golf in the winter months. Not only did we get the chance to play the course in excellent conditions with no rain, decent temperatures and not a breath of wind but the fairways and greens were as good as you could hope for in February and if the odd bunker was GUR, no one getting into them was going to moan about a free drop! Even though the testing 7th was out of action, its replacement 9A was no pushover and a worthy alternative. Their Clubhouse is also extremely comfortable and when it comes to the food options the Hankley carvery is second to none.

2. It’s not surprising that we’ve visited Hankley on so many occasions – this was our 12th visit in our (almost) thirty years and when the courses for 2024 were announced at the AGM, there were no dissenting voices at the news that we’ll be returning to the Club in a year’s time.

3. Chief among those cheer leaders for a swift return will be Ian Barrett who must love the course. As a Guest in 2005 before he became a BAGS member he got a hole in one at the short 2nd, then in 2008 as a member he won with 42 points and on this occasion he scored 41 to win by three from Richard Lister and Andy Skilton. This takes Ian’s number of day wins to 9, only one behind Jon and Graham’s 10 and he goes up to sixth in the BAGS Order of Merit with 58 points. There was also extra icing on the cake because he had qualified for the Captain’s Bowl so ran out an easy winner of this Strokeplay Competition with a gross 86 (including a 10!). All this success brought him to the attention of our Handicap Secretary and Ian has been cut to 13 which has brought his BAGS figure much more in line with his Club numbers. Well done Ian and let’s see how your season progresses off 13…….

4. At the AGM it was very much the Changing of the Guard as VC Mark (after yet another solid round) took over from Kevin after his highly successful Captaincy year and Andy Martin stepped in as the new Vice. In other changes long serving (30 years no less!) Treasurer John has now begun the transition to Matt and Hedley stepped down as Chairman allowing founder member Keith Gatford to move into the role. I have one more event in the driving seat before Andy Skilton and Stuart Smillie officially take on the job though they have been working hard on the event planning for 2024. Also involved – as he has been for some time now – is Andy Harper who has already done a great job on the September Yorkshire tour and has recently returned from a Continental recce with future skipper Andy who has selected Belgium as the tour choice for his year of office.

5. Though Hedley will retain his involvement with the Charity event, Chris Presley becomes Chairman of that Committee being ably assisted by Niall and the income for The Marsden has already been given a huge boost mainly by Luke’s efforts at Hankley where he took well over £500 in the Tenners Draw for a very special prize. I gather Tom Longhurst is planning to build on this start at the RAC so let’s all help him get over the £1000. We’ve already got a target of a much needed machine to raise funds for by June so with your normal generosity we are confident of yet another successful campaign.

6. In the Majors though it’s very early days, the new Captain and VC are setting a hot pace in the Chairman’s and Memorial with 71 and 66 respectively. Ian’s 41 will naturally stand him in good stead when he adds other rounds but in the meantime he sits at the top of the Treasurer’s unofficial leaderboard as no one has yet played the requisite qualifying number of rounds.

7. All eyes are now on our next event at RAC where we will celebrate our 30 th anniversary. We currently have 56 members down to play with a further 14 guests also in the frame. Two of these are past members – Chris Bower (our second Captain way back) and Peter Barkham – and we also have 10 additional guests for dinner including three past Captains and John Hartnett who was the winner of our first event at Wentworth in 1993. So that’s 80 people who are currently listed to attend the dinner. It should be a great occasion on the Old Course and afterwards in the Cedar Room in the handsome Clubhouse.

8. As you will recall you have the opportunity to purchase some 30 th anniversary clothing suitably embroidered with the special BAGs logo. To say that so far the take up has been slow would be a huge understatement as only two garments have been ordered though I shall add to that number. No order will be undertaken without an agreed price being quoted so if you are interested please let me know what item(s) you would like to have quoted then we can move ahead. You’ll have seen other members wearing BAGS embroidered golf clothing and I am sure they will vouch for the quality and value for money.

9. Good to see Gordon winning the Captain’s Trophy for Kevin’s year of office. He showed great resilience in playing in so many events including the tour despite undergoing cancer treatment and we all wish him the very best in his continuing fight and hope to see him soon – maybe even at our 30th
