1. Our 30th anniversary meeting went off very well with a good turnout of 66 golfers and another 6 who attended the meal afterwards. The weather was kind, with sunshine for Mark’s drive in – not matched by its length but that’s another story! – then cloudy and most important no rain.

2. The RAC was a wonderful venue for such an important event and the magnificent Clubhouse did not disappoint. Even the 19th hole where players socialised after their round is a very relaxed, spacious and welcoming area and was well used especially by the guys who finished early. When they got to the Cedar Room they were treated to the sight (and later the taste) of a 30th anniversary carrot cake which rounded off the meal very nicely.

3. It was Keith Marshall who led the field home with a creditable 38 pts beating Tom (of the Longhurst dynasty) and Gary Langdon by one point. This was Keith’s second win since he joined BAGS in 2016 and he has a great record for consistency with six other podium places and a shed load (15 actually) of Novelty Prizes. Well done Keith and the nice reward from BAGS was a bottle of champagne in the take aways and an extra present from brother Ian of a one shot cut in your handicap to 9 which exactly matches the number of single figure players we now have in BAGS.

4. The first qualifiers in the Chairman’s now that we have reached three counting rounds show the Captain and VC at the top of the list, Mark with 101 and Andy 100. Undoubtedly they will add to these scores but there’s a host of people behind with third best scores in the 20s whose figures will increase substantially once they have cast off that errant round. So watch how this competition develops over the next crucial three months.

5. Mark’s Captain’s Challenge was a huge success with around £500 going to the Charity so though the length of the drive was not up to his usual standard - ‘I was fine on the range beforehand’ he told me- in my 29 drive ins I have seen much, much worse. You know who you are and let’s just put it down to nerves……!

6. The Royal Marsden gained in other respects too as Tom Longhurst added £500 in tenners to the handsome start given to him by Luke at Hankley. There’s a prize of a Worplesdon four ball waiting for the lucky winner so keep the tenners coming in right through to the draw at Betchworth.

7. With less than three months to go to that event we shall be contacting all players and guest teams in the next two weeks to make their payments as it is a major exercise to collect nearly £10000. Betchworth members will receive a green fee discount of which they will advised when they are e mailed.

8. The 30th year celebration dinner was great fun and it was so good to see our first and second Captains (Roy Jennings and Chris Bower) again along with John Hartnett our first event winner. As those present will know, an event programme was produced with an account of our history and if any of those present would like a copy, please e mail me and I will bring you one to Tandridge in April.

9. John and I were absolutely thrilled to receive the magnificent books containing the reminiscences of all previous Captains over the years and how on earth Keith, Hedley, Ian and the Captains were able to keep such a monumental task secret for so long is amazing. Suffice to say the gifts could not have been more appropriate and will give us pleasure looking back over 30 years of our history with all those stories and some superb pictures. I will bring my copy to Tandridge for (very careful) inspection as I am sure you will enjoy looking at such a wonderful account of our first three decades. We have had so much pleasure steering BAGS from small beginnings to where it is today and know that the Society will go from strength to strength helped by the new Committee who have really hit the ground running with plans already in place. The 2024 venue choices are a good example where Andy and Stuart have liaised with future Captain Andy Martin to offer an excellent selection of top rated courses.

10. It was good to see Harry playing golf again after such a long break and we are still hoping Gordon might be fit enough to attend the meal at Tandridge as it is not too far from his daughters’ houses in Redhill. My last conversation with him was very positive as he is putting on weight again and looking forward to catching up with his old friends. The feeling is certainly mutual, Gordon.

11. You may well be pleased to know that this is my last newsletter having started this method of communication nearly 30 years ago. Life moves on and I am giving my I pad a rest from these reviews of the previous event and general BAGS news but that doesn’t mean I am hanging up my clubs and I can only hope that in shedding my responsibilities my abysmal form on the courses over the last 18 months or so can improve. Whether or not it does, I will still enjoy socialising with you all over a drink and a meal and I thank you for your support over the last 30 years – it has been a great journey.
